I received a gift of an Olympus FE 210 Camera June 14. The camera worked fine until August 9. After five minutes of use, the LCD screen developed a black dot in the center. I did not drop the camera; I did not apply any pressure to the screen or any other mishandling. I contacted technical support and was told to send it in for repair. I was of the understanding this problem would be covered under warranty, since I had recently received it. However, I was informed; the LCD was damaged and would be $90.00, to repair when the camera cost $149.00. I sent copies of the receipt; I registered the camera for warranty online when I received the camera, only to be told by employees this did not confirm my warranty and is used for surveys I expected reasonable service with a new camera but was told I had to have been the one who damaged the camera and it was not covered by any warranty.
I contacted and discussed this issue with one of the supervisors who told me this type of damage happens often, even with protective camera bags, in purses etc. I believe if this damage occurs often there must be some defect with the camera, not the customer, it should not be that fragile. She reduced the cost but still charged me a substantial fee to repair the camera. Because it was a gift I felt compelled to have it repaired, however, after discussing the problem with the store where it was purchased they willingly replaced the camera. Olympus did nothing to support their product, returned my emails, or letters. I was told by one of their unprofessional employees I was going in circles making it an issue and they would gladly repair the camera at the reduced price.
