We've all heard the story from the sales reps that the "shelf" model is fine and under "full factory warranty" and that the unit you are buying will perform "just like it came fresh out of the box." My "open box" purchase of a PANASONIC model SC-DP1 combination am/fm stereo DVD player was to have a 1 year factory warranty.
Near the end of this warranty the unit failed to turn on and work. I returned the "open box" unit to CIRCUIT CITY and was very curtly told that it was not their problem and I should take the unit to MUNN TV on the other side of town. MUNN TV advises they will repair the unit in two weeks or have PANASONIC refund the full purchase price.
Neither of these promises were kept. When I did press MUNN TV for answers I was told that PANASONIC says "sorry, failure of the unit is not our problem and that CIRCUIT CITY should not have sold the open box unit to me in the first place. I did contact PANASONIC on this issue and they blew me off like a tumble weed. THINK TWICE before purchasing an "OPEN BOX" item at CIRCUIT CITY because what they say, and what they do, are not what will happen IF there is a warranty problem.
My advise is to buy only with a credit card that has consumer fraud protection that protects your purchase AND your wallet. RIPPED OFF at CIRCUIT CITY and not liking it.
