I've had Nextel either via my father's company or personmal account. When Dad got the Nextels in 1997, I loved them. However, my love for the company went down the tubes. Let me explain:
For the past several years, the service quality for Nextel has gone down. Dropped calls, service outages (error code 304) calls going nowhere (into dead air) increased tenfold. I even had a 911 call dropped while reporting an impaired driver! (The police department called me back, asking why I had hung up on a 911 call. I explained that the call wasn't a hang up, but a dropped call from my Nextel. You could just see the 911 dispatcher shaking her head when she told me she has Nextel and hers did the same thing!)
Many complaints were made to all sorts of agencies, and Nextel replied to all of them. They claim there isn't great coverage in Chicago. No joke! I carry a Blackberry now, and the service still is extremely poor. Nextel says I can cancel my contract without penalty; however, after reading some of the entries here, I'm not so sure I want to do that.
Another new thing that I have noticed with my Blackberry is that the call will say 'connecting' and then drop. The menu where I can see what happened with my calls says 'Aborted'. Obviously if I am calling someone, I am NOT going to abort the call!
I've asked some of the Nextel reps if they are going to start using Sprint towers. Not for a while I have been told.
If you're thinking about getting Nextel, my suggestion is DON'T. Their service stinks, and you may end up getting a dropped 911 call to report a true medical/fire/police emergency.
