Four years ago, Smithfield purchased the old Farmland Foods plant in Dubuque, Iowa. They said they were going to close for a few months then reopen the plant. That was four years ago. They never reopened the plant. The plant has just sat there and has basically been allowed to fall apart. Smithfield said that it was the lack of state aid that kept them from reopening the plant. That's an outright lie, they never asked for any sort of aid. Smithfield apparently intends to let the plant sit empty forever, just so they don't have to worry about a competitor. I just want everyone to be aware if Smithfield comes to town not to accept their word at face value. They may screw your town over just like they did us.
