Baby boomer reinventing self, unfair student treatment, denied access to Kaplan Choice loan, blocked from classes, anxious student, ripoff

Hi Sweetwilliamjoe, I was so blessed to run across your post of your experience with Kaplan University. I have a similar and unfortunate story to tell. Because of you I am going to take this opportunity to vent my frustrations and leave this issue in Gods hands. I am in my 4th semester with Kaplan University Online, laid off and have job searched like crazy to obtain work to catch up with my debts and responsibilities. My unemployment checks have been stopped, postponed, and has had as much as 6 weeks breaks, leaving me trying to catch up on bills. Bills were piling up so I reached out to Kaplan University and inquired into the Kaplan Choice Loan, especially since I was getting calls from the collections department @ Kaplan University about my past due monthly payments and threats of being blocked from my classes. I informed them I was interested in getting the Kaplan Choice loan. Several weeks later I still have not even gotten as far as applying for the loan. Each person I have talked to in the Financial Aid Dept. And other advisors have given me different information. The website (Genesis lending) I have been directed to, will not allow me to apply for the Kaplan Choice loan. I asked a representative to try the websites out her-self and she was not able to access the websites either. I was then told the websites were not working properly and I would receive an email after the websites were reported to the company that maintains them, this never happened. Going into the 6th week of unsuccessful communications, I left a couple of messages for a supervisor or manager to call me and each time I was told one would get back with me in 72 hours. Needless to say I still have not received a call from neither a supervisor nor manager. I was getting conflicting information so often I asked the Kaplan Representative, are you a student? I have returned to school to further my education at 46 years lived, landed on the presidents list with a 3.8 grade point average and I am an honors student. I do not qualify for any grants and or any pell grants because of my last years households income, which was barely above $45.000 including my spouses income. I have followed scholarship leads, filled out applications and applied for many different scholarships and have yet to qualify for any. Additionally, while I have spent the past few months applying and being turned down by all the federal and private school loans because of missed payments on my credit report. I have presently been blocked from attending classes, while the university has and continues to receive my initial school tuition payments from the government, for thousands of dollars. I too asked to be withdrawn from this semester classes by email, on the 7th day of the beginning of the semester and was told I would owe the school for the time already spent in class plus additional monies. I am blessed to have sent 2 of my 4 children to college, my youngest daughter is a registered nurse and the next daughter has a masters degree in business, she served in the war in Iraq, has been employed since graduating college and is currently attending school for a masters degree in education byway of her employers. I want my children to be as proud of me as I am of them. Where is help for baby boomers that return to school already in debt? Meanwhile, jobs are not as available as they have been in the past, especially for people my age. My dreams and efforts that I have put into school are being blocked and my school work is behind. Can someone please guide me as to what to do, as I am attempting to reinvent myself to compete with todays youth, who so often capture employers eyes and are hired for todays jobs? I have even applied for a job in a city that is 4 hours away from my home and have been granted the opportunity to interview for said job. While, I am not particularly happy about leaving my husband and mom behind to pursue work, it is an opportunity to gain employment. If I am hired for the job, I still have to buy a car for transportation since we are a one car household and provide for myself living arrangements for my work week and hopefully will get to see my husband and mom on days off. Two weeks ago my husband was laid off from his job after 16 years of full time employment. The storm I am in leaves me anxious to merely wake up each morning.in conclusion, I remember reading of the low retention rate of Kaplan Universitys students and wondered why the rate was so low. I now see some factors that could possibly explain this statistic; perhaps I should have explored the low retention rate before I signed on. Sincerely, Anxious student
