I too have fallen into the harrasment by CAMCO. I work all day and when I get home, I notice on my caller ID that I sometimes have six or seven calls a day from these people. I was home a few days ago and the phone rang and displayed BLOCKED NAME and a number in the 876 area code (which after searching I have discovered is Jamaica — pretty interesting).
Not recognizing the number right away I answered and sure enough it was a woman from CAMCO calling to collect on a $2000 debt. The second thing out of her mouth was that she could settle it today for $700 if I would give her my checking account number.
When I asked what this debt was in reference to, she said she couldn't tell me. Then I repeated "what is this $2000 debt?" This time she told me it was a Citibank card and that it was linked to my SSN.
I then asked when this was from, she said I show you made a payment in 1993, I replied "so you're calling about an account that is ten years old." "Yes" I then asked "and you're calling to make a collection for Citibank?" She responded "yes" So I repeated "You're calling for Citibank? I was then told to hold on.By this time I was completely fed up so I hung up the phone.
Luckily I had recently read other reports on this website and I did not feel like she was had the upper hand and could bully me by trying to ruin my credit report.
