On, August 31st, service man, Mr. Billy Pack cleaned out chimney. During his visit, he indicated that the flues were not code conforming. He proposed to correct deficiencies for a price of $2,900.00.
Work was started during the week of September 10th and metal flues were removed for the two appliances, one wood and one gas inserts. The work was not completed due to flues not being received from supplier.
On September 18th, I was contacted by Mr. Pack and informed that he had made an error in his code assessment. His interpretation was that only two wood inserts or two gas inserts could be installed in a masonry liner. Since we had a gas and a wood, he stated that we had to replace one of the appliances to match the other.
Since I'm a profesional engineer w / a mechanical engineering degree, I could not find the code basis that he mentioned. He could only refer to advise from old timers. I researched codes from NFPA 54,211 and International Mechanical Code.
We agreed to meet and discuss the situation in more detail at our home. The technician was also to bring his code analysis as well as my operating manuals for the equipment that he took from our house.
Three meetings were scheduled and he failed to show up at each time. During my last conversation with him, he agreed to return the operating and instruction manuals and return the $725.00 deposit. We have not received our deposit nor booklets.
I contacted John Judd, President of Chimney Solutions and left voice mails and have not received a return phone call. I now have two fireplaces which are inoperable. Another company has been contacted to review this matter. This firm has certified members from the National Fireplace Institute and disagreed with Mr. Packs assessments. They also contacted the NFI to confirm your persons evaluation and are perplexed at his statements.
Chimney Solutions called and arranged meeting for Nov 9th. No one showed up. A technician called on Nov 12th to schedule another meeting which he again did not show up.
These people do not have competent people on staff and appears to peddle fear due to saftey issues. There was nothing wrong w / my house to start w / and now I'm paying $1,500.00 to have metal flues reinstalled.
The address also is not correct as printed on their proposal. This address is 221 E St. Charles Suite G Villla Park. I've sent mail registered and overnight which was sent back.
