You can fight them. They are preying on the ill informed consumer hoping you'll pay rather than fight

I too got a collection letter for a Verizon phone number I didn't recognize. My Verizon phone number was the same for 12 years before I left NYC, paid my final bill and continued my Verizon service upstate (5 years ago).
I sent them a letter demanding validation and no contact except through the USPS.

I sent it registered mail return receipt. About a week after I got the return receipt these people violated the no contact request with another phone call.

I sent them another registered letter explaining they had violated 2 laws regarding this account; the first being the cease collection until the debt was validated and the second the no contact except through the USPS.

I then got a letter stating the account was closed.

Fight back. Send a validation letter. Make them prove it is your debt. Make them prove it is not past the SOL. Call them on it when they violate Federal Collection laws.
