I got this nice little postcard with my mail today, addressed to me personally and reading:
"Dear (Me),
We are trying to reach you with Good News! It is real important that you Call Toll free 1-800-963-1967
Control # 0712111068
Thanks
Amanda Walters
Call 10 am to 8:30 pm EST
Monday thru Friday"
I was a little skeeved by the poor grammar — "real important" instead of really important, "thru" instead of through, unnecessary capitalized words, etc. So i decided to block my number and call them and see what was going on. I dialed several times and kept getting a recording that urged me to keep calling because all circuits were busy.
Things everyone should know to tell scams apart from legitimate companies:
1- A legitimate company will ALWAYS identify itself, and provide a website in addition to a phone number
2- A legitimate company will actually contact you instead of sending you a postcard telling you they're trying to contact you and asking YOU to call
3- A legitimate company will give you a good reason why you are being contacted, not make you wonder what the hell is going on
I'm guessing these people are trying to sell something or other, but is this way of marketing even legal? Can these people be sued?
