Attempted to sue for a debt from 1997 ripoff

Shortly after being devastated by 2 hurricanes in I recieved notice from the county sheriff's office via telephone that I was to be served papers and being sued by Asset Acceptance for a credit card debt I owed prior to my husband being seriously injured and subsequently blinded from in 1997. I live very rural so the papers were never served.

Being the honest person that I am, I spoke to these rude horrible people concerning my reasons for being unable to pay. I also know that as head of household in the laws eyes, my wages cannot be garnished. I also have been paying $50.00 per month since October to avoid going to court as I work in Law Enforcement. These people have been so brazen as to come to my work to serve me, but I was not there. They continually called my place of employment which I know they cannot do.

The original debt was only $850.00. I believe that they puchased the same debt twice as this is what is shows on my credit report. They wanted $3450.00 of which I still owe $2700.00. How can this be if I pay them every month. I have refused to talk to any live person for the past 16 months as I also know I reliquinsh my legal rights if I do.

I told them I wanted everything in writing. They sent me a Judgement to sign, (that I never did) giving up my right to head of household so they could garnish my wages, I am not stupid. How can I beat this. I have paid more than the original debt which was charged off in 1998. I did not try to rip off any one. Our medical expenses were astronomical and something had to give. It just happened to be a charge account that Asset Acceptance bought!
