Today I was dismissed (by phone) from Sylvan Learning Center as a math tutor. Grounds for dismissal were that I asked too many questions about what materials I should be using for my students. The Center does not allow for too much prep time (it has to be done on your own time). Each of the three students has a thick notebook from which to pull lessons. Several texts/workbooks are used for follow up lessons. Very little active teaching is done due to time management issues as each of the students has an individualized program.
I have been involved in education as a special educator for twenty-seven years and have annually received high marks for my teaching. I took this job not for the $11 per hour but for the joy of teaching. I truly feel that students (and parents) would be better served by hiring a private tutor in order to gain a far more qualitative one-on-one experience. I would strongly urge anyone who is considering placing their child in the above program to weigh other options. The profit motive is the bottom line for the Sylvan Learning Center.
