When I first graduated from college with a degree in math, I was wanting a part-time job so I could work for a bit while going back for my graduate degree. I found Sylvan Learning Center, and it sounded appealing, so I took the offer.
After working for a few months, the Education Director and I had a falling out, leading to my resignation. Since then, I've had a real guilty conscience about ever working there. They make so many false claims, some of which I'm going to reveal here, so you will be more informed.
The company touts one-on-one individualized instruction. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are actually three kids per one table, and those three kids could each be working on something totally different. Each student is lucky to get 15 minutes of individual tutoring with the instructor each instruction hour.
The hours they give the teachers are absolutely shameful. If you're a teacher looking to make some extra cash, might I suggest private tutoring? You'll make more, and get more hours, because as a Sylvan teacher you're lucky if you get 10 hours per week.
Did I mention the outrageous price they charge the parents? $45/hour for a service that can be had for about $15/hour from a private tutor. Actually, private tutoring services would be better, as more individual attention would be given instead of this 3-to-1 business.
Ultimately, I could no longer work there knowing the false claims the company makes. Sylvan is truly a ripoff in every sense of the word. I've since resigned, and I don't recommend anyone (potential employees or customers) fall into the trap they lay for you. Get a private tutor, save some money, and get a better end result.
