Sylvan Learning Center has been unaccommodating, inconsiderate, rude and disrespectful to say the least!
Recently, my daughter began attending Sylvan Learning Center (on Girls School Road) twice a week.
I asked the staff at Sylvan if I could quickly view my child's work papers/folder/file on two separate occasions since she began, and each time I was denied.
It is my right legally, and as a parent, to view what my child has done at any time without question. Additionally, I would like some tangible evidence of work she has done during the 60 minute instruction period.
I was told by the Center Director that an appointment was needed (for a conference) to discuss what my child has done. I explained that I just wanted to simply take a quick look at the papers she has done and that was all. Again, I was told an appointment was needed.
Per the Sylvan web site, "If you don't want to wait until your next scheduled parent conference to find out how your child is progressing, just ask! Your Sylvan Learning Center's staff will be happy to talk to you at any point. Your input is a vital part of your child's tutoring program."
The Sylvan TV commercials advertise one-on-one instruction and "individualized" lesson planning when in fact there are always two or three children at each table being given worksheet after worksheet from books that they may or may not have the legal right to copy or use. There is no individualized one-on-one instruction!
Additionally, I was told that I was not allowed to view or observe my child in the room (where they are supposedly teaching). I have always been extremely involved with my child's education and I have never come across anything like this! At my daughter's public school, attending the classroom occasionally is something that is encouraged and suggested through her teachers not forbidden as it is at Sylvan.
It is obvious to me that Sylvan goes out of their way to hide what they advertise and promise; there is a reason!
The Center Director and Director of Education have been nothing but unprofessional and rude - clearly taking sides of the person with the biggest wallet.
If you want to do what is best for your child (and your wallet) do some research and hire a tutor through the school!
