My roommate received a call from Merchant's Credit asking to talk to me, and then rattled off my entire social security number to this person. The individual from Merchants who called me gave his name as Rick Hunter.
I called Rick Hunter and asked what he was calling me about. He stated they were trying to collect on debt from a credit card from 1992 - 13 years ago. This debt had been taken care of in 1999 when I purchased my house.
Through many more phone calls, I was able to speak with a manager who explained that in the state of Illnois, the statue of limitations on uncollected debt is 20 years ago. Here is another problem, the debt in question was from a credit card issued out of New York.
I am going to report this to the Illinois Attorney General's office and to the Federal Trade Commission.
These people need to be stopped.
