In the beginning of June we decided to pull my husband's credit report so we would be prepared to get a mortgage. We found a very old debt (8) on there. It had been referred to Inovision Marlin (an affiliate of Merchants' Credit Guide. When my husband called he gave them all his information (could they use his SS# to report him for fradulent debts?). They informed him of the $477 debt, but said for 289 it would be paid off. He asked if they would report it as paid as agreed on credit reports, they said yes.
They also stated they had no affiliation with Merchants' Credit Guide (the first person we spoke to said that they WERE MCG). So he paid them the $289. Now we called back to see if they received payment. They said yes, but that it will show up on his credit report as settled, and we find out they are in fact MCG. We asked to speak to a manager.
I brought up how this debt was past the statute of limitations and that we really didn't have to pay it, so how could they have purchased the debt in 5? He told me that statute of limitation laws do not exist and that they can collect on a debt at any time. What can I do now hat I've paid? Am I just out of luck?
