I had no water coming from my private well due to a bad "Pumptrol" pressure switch. The technician showed up in a short time and informed me that the Pumptrol pressure switch needs to be replaced since it's burnt out. I told him he can go ahead and replace it just so that my family can once again have running water in the house.
Well, in addition to replacing the pressure switch, he went ahead and did "extra" work such as also replacing the pressure guage with a more expensive "liquid-filled" model, supplied additional brass nipple, serviced the pressure tank and recalibrated the pressure switch. He also tried to convince me to "upgrade" the pressure tank soon.
He charged me over $800 for the whole job which took him about 45 minutes. When I asked him why it's so expensive, he said that it is the cost of the materials and labor. When I asked him why he had to also replace the pressure guage, he said that it is more accurate than the original one I had and it would help him judge the correct pressure.
I researched the cost of materials and normal price for such a job and found that the Pumptrol pressure switch is only about $30 or so! The most anyone would ask for this job is maybe $300 if even that much. But I was in a bind since I have a small child and needed running water as soon as possible.
I also just found that they have an "F" approval rating from the BBB. Next time I will take time to research a company before calling and not act out from panic and pressure.
