The product in question is Bright Effects 40 watt replacement compact fluorescent bulbs carried by Lowes. I purchased two packages with two bulbs in each package.
Two problems. First, the screw-in bases are obviously not made to the correct standard specifications, as the bottom contact in the screw-in base would not make contact in 80% of the bulb sockets I tried them in and therefore would not work at all in these cases.
Second, the light output is not even close to the the light output of a standard 40 watt incandescent bulb for which it is designed to replace. A 40 watt incandescent is usually rated at about 450-500 lumens. I would estimate the light output of these at about 20-30% of a 40 watt incandescent bulb (i.E., 100-150 lumens). Therefore, it is useless in most applications. This also means that this bulb is significantly less energy efficient than other brands of compact fluorescents for a given light output.
