We were looking for a movers to move our entire belongings from WA to CT, we reviewed a few on Monster.com's web site and finally settled on Elite Van Lines Moving and Storage Inc. They always answered the phone and called back promptly.
I asked them to quote me on a 8'x 8'x 9' area as that was similar to the area of our last move.
Our quote for 571 cu ft was $1998.50 which was $3.50 per cu ft.
The pick-up was booked for Friday 7th of June at between 9.00am and 12.00noon. On the pick up day we waited until noon then called Elite, they said there had been a delay and the truck would come between 12.00 and 3.00pm. We again waited and the truck again did not arrive. We called Elite once more and then they said the truck would be there by 10.00pm. We waited until 8.00pm then called them and they gave us the mobile phone number of the driver as they were closing. I called the driver 6 times between 8.00pm Friday and 1.00am Saturday but even though he said he was close he did not arrive.
We left our house at 2.00am to go to the airport in order to catch our 7.00am flight to JFK.
I arrived in CT at my hotel and called my friend he said that the landlord of my house had met the movers and had supervised the loading of all my belongings and furniture. The landlord had said to my friend that he wanted to speak to me urgently.
I called the landlord and he said they had loaded all the shipment but they had amended the cubic footage to 15,000 cu ft. And changed the total amount due to $5766.00 which he thought was totally excessive.
And he said at that time that he thought that they were trying to scam me. He also said he had to sign the contract as the truck was loaded and locked up and they were not going to unload it.
I asked about this huge adjustment they just said there was a lot more shipment that I asked them to quote for. But I know the quote was an estimate but I did not expect a 3 times increase.
On June 21st I received a call from Elite saying that they would not deliver my shipment until I paid 60% of the bill to them. And after I had paid it would be 2 weeks until I received delivery. We wanted our belongings by this time as we had been living out of suitcases for 6 weeks and I have a wife and two children. I agreed to pay and sent payment over night.
We waited two weeks and called Elite to find out what was the arrival date, I noticed at this time that the money had been drawn on my account. Elite said they were having trouble and were behind so our shipment was still in storage in San Francisco.
My wife and I called Elite every day from July 10th to July 19th some days they would leave us hanging on for 25 minutes and then hang up, sometimes they would give excuses or get rude with us. They basically screened the calls and would not talk to us.
Eventually on July 26th Elite called and she said Elite had employed another moving company Right On Time Movers of California to take over our move. And they would be picking up our shipment on Monday 29th July, and bring it to us. She gave us the number of Right On Time Movers and a contact there.
We called Right On Time Movers on the Monday and they said they had picked-up our shipment. On Wednesday the 31st July.
Elite called and asked me what our Lot number was I asked why and she said that Right On Time Movers where at the storage place but couldn't get our shipment without the number. I was confused.
Then on Thursday Right On Time Movers called me to say my shipment had been picked up that day. And should take up to 14 days to get to us. After 12 days on Aug 12th we called them and they gave us the number of their driver. My wife called the driver to ask when he would get to us and he said that he did not have any delivery for us at all.
We called Right On Time Movers and they seemed confused for a while then got nasty with us, and eventually said that they don't have the contract for our move and slammed down the phone.
We called Elite who said they would find out what has happened, they called back and said our shipment was still in storage.
At this time we were starting to think our belongings where gone and they couldn't find it or it was all stolen.
For the next two weeks we went back to the calling every day and getting screened and hung up on again. We had moved into our house on August 1st and it was now August 16th. We had to sleep on air mattresses and buy kitchen equipment etc to live in an empty house. We continued to call and eventually Elite made some promises that they would have a truck at the storage place to pick up our shipment soon.
On Aug 28th Elite called to say the shipment had been picked up and would be arriving the next week. On Sept 3rd we called Elite and got the drivers phone number and on the 4th he called to say he would deliver our shipment on Thursday 5th Sept. Which he did.
When our belongings were unloaded and checked off there were items missing/lost see list attached. Also damage too two tables and two bedside units.
I took this opportunity to measure the space/cubic area that my shipment took up on the truck and it measured approximately 10'x10'x9' which is an area of 900 cu ft not anything close to the 1500 cu ft that Elite made me pay for.
