Elite Moving Systems, Mr. Howe's company, was used to move my belongings from storage on 9/17 to my new residence. On the night of 9/17, I noticed some things were missing: 1 Sony DVD/VCR, 1 green Wilson gym bag filled with toiletries, and a box containing owners manuals, remote controls and other papers.
I called Mr. Howe and left a message on the morning of 9/18. When there was no return call, I went by his place of business, which appeared to be his home, and told him about the missing items. He took down the information, and said that the truck that was used to move me was out and that he would check into it and get back with me. He never called to let me know whether or not he had found the missing items. I left a message later in the day, and still no call.
I called on 9/19, and left a message - no call back. I called today, 9/20, and still no call.
I made the mistake of trusting the individual movers because one, Rob, had lead the crew that had been part of the first move which moved me from my apartment into storage. I made the mistake of leaving my belongings unattended while they loaded the truck.
At the time of this complaint, I haven't heard anything from Mr. Howe and I will be filing a theft report with the Roseville Police Department after work.
Follow-up:
Was contacted by the Roseville Police Department and was told that the owner "vouched" for the integrity of the movers. I was also told that I could pursue a civil suit or report the matter to my insurance company. To pursue a lawsuit would entail taking a day off work (I make $200 / day) and would have a 50-50 chance of winning.in either event I'd still be out of a day's pay.
If I file an insurance claim, I run the risk of my insurance rates going up. So I took a casualty-loss write-off on my income tax.
