After calling 3 garage door repair companies for quotes/estimates, I chose Garage Door Service Company since they responded quickly to my call and gave me the lowest estimate to replace a broken torsion spring. A1 Garage Doors and 1 Clear Choice Garage Doors both quoted me approximately $235.00. Over the phone, an associate (Sergio) agreed that the invoice should not be MUCH more than $215 parts and labor after I informed him that I researched which torsion spring I needed.
After looking at prices for torsion springs at Lowe's, Home Depot, and ACE, I found that the average price for a torsion spring was 54.99 each. I am aware that anytime you pay for a service from an independent business that there will be a 'slight' mark-up in prices on the products they carry/sell. After Sergio informed me that the price per spring is anywhere from 39.99 to 109.99 he agreed that given the prices I found for my spring it is unlikely to cost 109.99. He recommended that I replace both torsion springs to ensure that they can honor the warranty. He told me the labor would be the same at $75.00 since the bar that the springs are fastened on is already down when replacing one spring.
I cannot complain that the service provided was ineffective because my garage door torsion springs have been repaired. The issue arose once we were billed $310.00. Garage Door Service Company service man Mike attempted to charge us 149.00 in labor as well as the full $109 per spring. He became irate when I informed him that these were not the prices I was given when I made the appointment. Once he called his office he agreed the labor was the $75.00 I was told but would not budge on the price per spring. He referred me to his manager Chris.
When I contacted Chris it was apparent that he was briefed on my order from Mike's documentation. He immediately spoke to me in an unfriendly and defensive manner. I discussed my displeasure regarding the pricing explaining the quotes given to me by other companies and the research I'd done on parts. Chris justified the price of the torsion springs they used because they are higher quality and have a lifetime warranty. He proceeded to degrade Home Depot, Lowe's and ACE's products stating that they would only last a year.
The justification I was given was not satisfactory and relayed in a very distasteful manner. If you feel comfortable for paying TWICE as much for parts commend insulting customer service then I recommend Garage Door Service Company.
