With a paper or digital receipt, the refund goes back to the original payment method, and purchases paid by check are refunded in cash. Without a receipt, returns under $10 are refunded in cash and returns over $10 are refunded on a Kroger merchandise gift card, with a signed return slip. Items bought with WIC benefits cannot be refunded but can be exchanged for the exact same item, baby formula needs a receipt for a refund or exchange, and returns of tobacco, beer, wine and liquor follow local law.
- Pickup, delivery and freshness refunds. Kroger's freshness guarantee offers a replacement or refund for fresh items that disappoint. - Prescription-pricing class settlement (open for claims). If you paid for prescriptions at Kroger using insurance between December 9, 2018 and August 23, 2026, you may be a class member in Kirkbride et al. v. The Kroger Co., No. 2:21-cv-00022 (S.D. Ohio). Claims must be filed by December 21, 2026 at krogersavingsclubsettlement.com or by mail to Kroger Savings Club Litigation Settlement, Attn: Claim Form, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103; claims of $8,000 or more need records of the payments. The deadline to opt out or object passed on October 22, 2026. The administrator can be reached at (888) 535-4262 or [email protected].
- Food recalls. Kroger posts recalled products on its Recall Alerts page (kroger.com/i/recall-alerts). The FDA lists food, drug and product recalls at fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts, and the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service lists meat, poultry and egg-product recalls at fsis.usda.gov/recalls. Recall notices usually tell customers to return the product to the store for a full refund.
- Pharmacy concerns. A complaint about how a prescription was filled or about a pharmacist goes to the board of pharmacy in the state where the store is, for example the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy (614-466-4143) or the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy (502-564-7910).
- If Kroger does not fix it. For a wrong charge on a credit card, send a written billing dispute to the card issuer within 60 days of the statement that shows the charge, under the Fair Credit Billing Act; for a debit card or a fuel-pump hold, contact your bank as soon as possible. For a problem with SNAP or EBT benefits charged at checkout, contact the SNAP agency in your state, which issues the EBT card. You can also file a complaint with your state attorney general's consumer protection office, with BBB, or with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Fake Kroger coupons, gift-card giveaways and surveys circulate on social media. A Kroger spokeswoman told Cincinnati station WCPO that Kroger does not post surveys in Facebook feeds or offer large grocery coupons for answering questions; the feedback survey printed on a Kroger receipt is the real one. Use only kroger.com, the Kroger app or 1-800-576-4377 for account, order and refund questions. If a complaint involves a specific store or fuel pump, note the store address, date, time and receipt before contacting Kroger.

Opioid settlements and the terminated Albertsons merger
Opioid claims. On September 8, 2023 Kroger announced an agreement in principle to settle most opioid claims brought by states, local governments and Native American tribes over its pharmacies' dispensing. It agreed to pay up to $1.2 billion to states and local governments and $36 million to tribes for abatement, each over 11 years, plus about $177 million in attorneys' fees and costs over 6 years. State attorneys general announced the finalized multistate settlement on November 4, 2024; it also requires Kroger pharmacies to monitor, report and share data on suspicious opioid prescriptions. Kroger's quarterly report says it finalized the state and local settlement on December 30, 2024 and the tribal settlement on September 26, 2025, and that the settlements are not an admission of wrongdoing or liability. Separately, West Virginia's attorney general announced a $68 million settlement with Kroger on May 4, 2023, and Washington's attorney general announced a $47.5 million settlement, payable over 11 years, on April 23, 2024. Kroger says it continues to defend opioid cases brought by non-participating governments and private parties.
Merger challenge. On February 26, 2024 the Federal Trade Commission opened an administrative proceeding to block Kroger's merger with Albertsons Companies, Inc. and, with nine states, sued in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. On December 10, 2024 the Oregon court issued a preliminary injunction and a Washington state court issued a permanent injunction, and the merger agreement was terminated on December 11, 2024. The fee dispute in Oregon and Albertsons' Delaware lawsuit are described in the court cases section.
Court cases involving Kroger
Kirkbride et al. v. The Kroger Co. (S.D. Ohio, No. 2:21-cv-00022). Insured customers allege that Kroger overstated the 'usual and customary' prices it reported to insurers for prescriptions, because it left out the lower prices it charged members of its Savings Club, so their copays were higher than they should have been. The legal claims are fraud, negligent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment, and none of them has been proven. Kroger denies any wrongdoing and says the special prices for paying club members were not its usual or customary prices; the court has not decided who is right. The class was certified on April 9, 2025, and a $17,000,000 settlement was preliminarily approved on June 24, 2026, with an amended order the next day. The case was reassigned to Judge Douglas R. Cole on October 2, 2026, and class counsel moved for attorneys' fees, costs and service awards on October 6, 2026. The court-authorized notice set the fairness hearing for January 11, 2027 before Judge Marbley and says the date may change; the settlement website posts the current date. The court has not yet granted final approval.
FTC et al. v. The Kroger Co. and Albertsons Companies, Inc. (D. Or., No. 3:24-cv-00347-AN). On December 10, 2024 the court preliminarily enjoined the Albertsons merger, and the deal was terminated the next day. In the Oregon case the court ruled on February 27, 2026 that the plaintiff states are entitled to attorneys' fees and costs (ECF 563); the states asked for about $10.3 million on March 31, 2026 (ECF 594), and Kroger and Albertsons opposed the amount.
Albertsons Companies, Inc. v. The Kroger Co. (Delaware Court of Chancery). Albertsons sued on December 10, 2024, alleging Kroger breached the merger agreement; it seeks the $600 million termination fee and damages for its shareholders, more than $8 billion in all. Kroger denied the allegations on March 17, 2025, filed counterclaims and says it owes nothing. A bench trial before Vice Chancellor Lori W. Will began on October 19, 2026; no decision has been issued.
Kroger's annual report also says that other claims, including personal injury, contract, employment discrimination and wage-and-hour matters, are pending against it, that some are or have been certified as class actions, and that management does not expect the resulting liability to be material.
