Groupon refunds, voucher problems, Groupon Bucks and complaints: what Groupon's own pages say (checked October 11, 2026)
Groupon's own pages, opened on October 11, 2026, set out the routes below. This site's archive holds 620 approved posts that name Groupon (or one of its country sites or Groupon Goods) as the company complained about, and 37 more that name a merchant together with Groupon; they are individual submissions, almost all written in 2011 to 2013, and none is a finding by a regulator or court.
Refunds (Groupon Refund Policy). For Local deals the policy says you can request a refund if the voucher has not been redeemed, no appointment has been made, the request is within 3 calendar days of purchase (unless the deal page says otherwise) and the deal is not marked Final Sale or non-refundable. It lists as not refundable: a redeemed voucher, an appointment already made, the 3-day window passed, Final Sale or non-refundable fine print, "Pay on View" deals once viewed, and a transaction for which a dispute "has been filed with and closed by your bank, regardless of outcome". For Travel deals you can request a refund if the merchant cannot book your stay before the book-by date. Groupon Goods "are eligible for return within 30 days of delivery at no cost"; for Marketplace items sold by third-party merchants the policy says return policies are set by the selling merchant and listed on the deal page. The policy's list of when a Goods refund is not available includes an item that "has already shipped" ("return policies apply instead") and a deal marked Final Sale ("non-refundable unless the item has a manufacturing defect"). Event tickets "are marked Final Sale unless stated otherwise on the deal page", and certain Live deals that are not marked Final Sale are "refundable only within 24 hours of purchase". Under the policy's Extraordinary Event Policy, if an event "is cancelled and not rescheduled, a full refund will be issued"; for a rescheduled event, refunds are available on request within 30 days of the announcement, and "if the new event date falls within 30 days of the announcement, refunds are available up to 72 hours before the event".
How refunds are paid. The policy says refunds "are generally issued as Groupon Bucks (store credit)" and "if eligible, refunds may be issued to your original form of payment"; card refunds are processed within 1 to 2 business days and may take up to 10 business days to appear. For Local and Travel vouchers it also says "The amount you paid never expires" and that the merchant "is solely responsible to you for honoring the voucher up to the amount paid, even after the promotional value has expired." That statement is about the paid value of a voucher; Groupon's Help Center article "How Groupon Bucks Work" (last updated April 2026) separately says a Groupon Bucks balance page shows the "balance, expiration date, and date of issuance", that Bucks "can be used toward other eligible purchases on the site" and that they "cannot be transferred from one account to another".
Reaching support. The Help Center article last updated August 2026 says "Support runs on chat, 24 hours a day, not by phone": log in, select the order from the Help Center, and chat; guests can use "Look up a guest order" with the order number and checkout email, and gift recipients can use "Get help with a gift". The Terms of Use also give an SMS help short code (text HELP to 85397).
If a merchant will not honor a voucher. The Help Center article "What to do if you are facing an issue Merchant" (last updated May 2026) says that if you followed the voucher's Need to Know and How to Use sections and still have trouble, you should log in, go to MyGroupons, find the order, click "See Details" and then "Manage Voucher". For a guest checkout it says to sign in with the email address used at checkout and enter the 6-digit verification code sent to that inbox, after which the purchase is linked to a Groupon account.
Formal disputes. The Terms of Use (last updated April 17, 2026) contain an arbitration agreement and class action waiver in section 24: a written pre-arbitration notice sent by certified mail to Groupon, Inc., c/o Legal Department, 35 W Wacker Dr FL 25, Chicago, IL 60601, a 60-day informal period, then arbitration administered by National Arbitration and Mediation (NAM); the section says you may bring a qualifying claim in small claims court. Read section 24 itself before relying on this summary.
Outside routes. A card-issuer dispute, a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, the FTC's ReportFraud site (which accepts reports about a company) and your state attorney general are separate from Groupon's process. The Illinois Attorney General's consumer protection page says the office "takes consumer complaints and can engage in informal dispute resolution on behalf of consumers" with problems including purchases. Keep the order number, deal page fine print and dates of every contact.
Regulator actions and inquiries involving Groupon
Connecticut Attorney General, 2011 inquiry and 2012 announcement. On July 14, 2011 the Connecticut Attorney General's office announced it had written to Groupon, Inc. asking how vouchers were sold and redeemed because expiration dates on some discount offers might breach the state's gift certificate law; the Attorney General said he had "not prejudged Groupon or reached any conclusions". On April 23, 2012 the office announced that Groupon "has improved the consumer disclosure information on discount vouchers sold nationwide": vouchers now state that the amount paid may be used with the merchant without expiration even after the promotional value expires, and the same terms apply to vouchers sold earlier. The release also says "Groupon disputed that Connecticut's gift card law applied to its vouchers" and that "No court has yet addressed or resolved the question."
Federal Trade Commission. An FTC Legal Library cases-and-proceedings search for "Groupon", run on October 11, 2026, returned one entry, "Group One Networks, Inc., et al.", a different company; it is not Groupon. No other regulator order naming Groupon was identified in the sources checked on October 11, 2026 (Groupon's FY2025 10-K and June 30, 2026 10-Q legal-proceedings notes, the Connecticut Attorney General press releases above, the FTC search and a federal docket search by party name), which is a statement about those sources only. Groupon's filings say it is party to consumer class actions and suits alleging violations of state consumer protection or privacy laws.
Who operates Groupon
Corporate facts. Groupon, Inc. is a Delaware corporation whose Common Stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under GRPN; its principal executive offices are at 35 West Wacker Drive, 25th Floor, Chicago, Illinois. The company's FY2016 10-K says it was incorporated on January 15, 2008 as ThePoint.com, Inc. and that it "started Groupon in October 2008". The Terms of Use say Groupon, Inc. "owns and operates" groupon.com and that vouchers "may be distributed by Groupon Merchant Services, LLC" or Groupon; Groupon is described as a platform on which merchants sell vouchers and "Merchants are the sellers and issuers of the Merchant Offerings and are solely responsible to you for the care, quality, and delivery of the goods and services".
Business (company's description). The FY2025 10-K calls Groupon "a global scaled two-sided marketplace that connects consumers to merchants" in Local, Goods and Travel categories, with revenue primarily "net commissions earned from selling goods or services on behalf of third-party merchants". It reports 1,734 employees at December 31, 2025 (421 in North America), about 16.2 million trailing-twelve-month active customers and gross billings of about $1.67 billion for 2025, by the company's own definitions (active customers are unique accounts, so one person may be counted more than once).
Recent events. The 10-K names Dusan Senkypl as CEO (appointed May 2024, interim CEO from March 2023). Form 8-Ks show that on May 21, 2026 the board approved a restructuring plan including a reduction of up to 400 positions globally (the 8-K says a majority of the reductions were expected to occur by the end of the third quarter of 2026, subject to local consultation requirements), on June 8, 2026 the company announced a new Chief Operating Officer effective August 3, 2026, and on June 11, 2026 stockholders held the annual meeting. Groupon acquired LivingSocial, Inc. on October 31, 2016 (FY2016 10-K); posts in this site's archive that name LivingSocial are not Groupon complaints.

This site's archive. 620 approved posts name Groupon, Groupon.com, Groupon Goods or a Groupon country site (UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, Spain, Hong Kong, "Groupon SA") as the company complained about; 37 more name a merchant together with Groupon. Posts by year: 2010: 3; 2011: 106; 2012: 340; 2013: 159; 2014: 11; 2025: 1. Many describe a merchant's service while naming Groupon, and many are from outside the United States (prices in pounds). Keyword counts across the 620 posts, which overlap and are not complaint categories: refund-related words in 218; customer service or no-response wording in 179; non-delivery wording in 83; voucher not honored or merchant closed wording in 64; unauthorized or fraudulent charge wording in 16. The archive is a set of user submissions and says nothing about Groupon's current practices.
Court filings involving Groupon
Company statement. Groupon's June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q says it is party to "putative class action complaints alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 ('TCPA') and related state telemarketing laws in connection with the Company's SMS marketing program", that the matters are at an early stage with no class certified, that it "believes it has meritorious defenses" and intends to defend itself vigorously, and that no amounts have been accrued.

On September 8, 2026 Groupon moved to transfer venue or in the alternative to compel arbitration, attaching versions of its Terms and the Tompkins, Freund and Benotman complaints as exhibits; the plaintiff filed an opposition on September 11, 2026.
- Dalton v. Groupon, Inc., D. Minnesota, 0:26-cv-04014, filed September 15, 2026 (Americans with Disabilities Act, per the docket header); only the complaint is docketed.
These are allegations and early procedural steps; none has produced a ruling on the merits. The Justia pages say they were last retrieved on the dates above, and later entries may exist on PACER.
Resolved matters in Groupon's filings. The FY2016 10-K reports that In re Groupon, Inc. Securities Litigation (N.D. Illinois) settled for $45.0 million in cash, with a denial of liability, and that the court gave final approval and dismissed the action with prejudice on July 13, 2016. It also reports that the consolidated consumer class actions In re Groupon Marketing and Sales Practices Litigation (S.D. California) settled for cash and Groupon credits worth $8.5 million, with final approval on March 23, 2016 and the settlement final and non-appealable as of June 23, 2016. The FY2022 10-K reports that a separate securities class action in the Northern District of Illinois (the "Securities Lawsuit", covering July 30, 2019 to February 18, 2020) settled for $13.5 million, covered by Groupon's insurance policies, and that the court granted final approval on October 28, 2022 with no opt-outs and no objections. These are investor cases, not consumer cases.
Tax matters. The FY2025 10-K says that on December 29, 2025 Groupon S.r.l. and the Italian tax authorities entered into a framework agreement under which Groupon S.r.l. "agreed to pay a total of approximately $25.3 million (€21.5 million)", inclusive of $10.4 million previously paid through installment plans, and that the company considers the Italian assessments "effectively settled as of December 31, 2025"; the June 30, 2026 10-Q says the 2013 to 2015 Portugal VAT assessment of about $4.5 million is final and that payment was made in July 2026. These are tax matters, not consumer cases.
Is Groupon Legitimate?
Groupon, Inc. is an SEC registrant (Nasdaq: GRPN) that filed a Form 10-K for fiscal 2025 on March 10, 2026 and a Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 on August 6, 2026, and its Terms of Use say Groupon, Inc. owns and operates groupon.com and give 35 W Wacker Dr, Chicago as the address for legal notices. It is a marketplace: under its Terms the merchants are the sellers and issuers of vouchers and are responsible for the goods and services, while Groupon's refund policy sets when Groupon itself refunds. BBB shows it as not accredited with a D- rating, citing 106 unanswered complaints, and Trustpilot shows 3.8 out of 5 from 69,922 reviews (figures in the complaint-record section). Pending TCPA lawsuits and a Connecticut Attorney General inquiry that ended in changed voucher disclosures in 2012 are described above. This page reports documented facts and does not rate the company.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a refund from Groupon?
Groupon's Refund Policy (opened October 11, 2026) says Local deal refunds can be requested if the voucher is unredeemed, no appointment has been made, the request is within 3 calendar days of purchase unless the deal page says otherwise, and the deal is not Final Sale. Goods can be returned within 30 days of delivery, while Marketplace items sold by third-party merchants follow the selling merchant's return policy listed on the deal page. Refunds are generally issued as Groupon Bucks, with refunds to the original payment method possible if eligible. Requests go through the Help Center chat.
Does Groupon have a customer service phone number?
Groupon's Help Center article last updated August 2026 says "Support runs on chat, 24 hours a day, not by phone" and describes logging in and chatting from the Help Center, a guest-order lookup and gift help. A phone number (888) 664-4482 appears on the BBB profile; Groupon's Help Center does not list it as a support line.
Do Groupon Bucks or the amount I paid expire?
For Local and Travel vouchers the Refund Policy says "The amount you paid never expires" and that the merchant is solely responsible for honoring a voucher up to the amount paid even after the promotional value expires; that statement covers the paid value of a voucher, not Groupon Bucks. The Help Center article "How Groupon Bucks Work" (last updated April 2026) says the Groupon Bucks page shows the balance, "expiration date, and date of issuance" and that Bucks "cannot be transferred from one account to another". The Terms of Use say that if an account is cancelled you may forfeit account credits such as Groupon Bucks. Pages opened October 11, 2026.
What can I do if a merchant will not honor my Groupon?
The Refund Policy says the merchant is solely responsible for honoring the voucher up to the amount paid, and the Terms say merchants are responsible for the quality and delivery of their goods and services. The Help Center article "What to do if you are facing an issue Merchant" (last updated May 2026) says to go to MyGroupons, find the order, click "See Details" and then "Manage Voucher"; guests are told to sign in with the checkout email address and a 6-digit verification code. The Refund Policy lists a dispute filed with and closed by your bank as a reason a refund is not available, so keep the order number, dates and fine print before choosing between Groupon's route and a card dispute.
Can I sue Groupon or join a class action?
Section 24 of Groupon's Terms of Use (updated April 17, 2026) provides for binding individual arbitration administered by NAM after a written pre-arbitration notice, with a class action waiver, and says a qualifying claim may be brought in small claims court. Groupon is a defendant in TCPA lawsuits filed in 2026. In a separate Florida case (Kolici, nature of suit "Other Statutory Actions") it moved to transfer venue or, alternatively, to compel arbitration; those dockets are summarized above.
What is Groupon's BBB rating?
As displayed on October 11, 2026, the BBB profile for Groupon, Inc. in Chicago shows a D- rating, not BBB Accredited, with the reason "Failure to respond to 106 complaint(s) filed against business", 3,993 complaints in the last 3 years and a 1.04 out of 5 customer-review average from 573 reviews. BBB lists another "Groupon Inc" profile separately.
Has a state attorney general taken action against Groupon?
In July 2011 the Connecticut Attorney General wrote to Groupon about voucher expiration dates and in April 2012 announced that Groupon had improved its voucher disclosures; the release says Groupon disputed that the state's gift card law applied. No other state attorney general order naming Groupon was identified in the sources checked on October 11, 2026.
Are there lawsuits against Groupon now?
Justia dockets opened on October 11, 2026 show TCPA complaints filed against Groupon, Inc. in 2026 in N.D. California, N.D. Illinois, S.D. Texas and C.D. California, a Florida case in which Groupon moved to transfer or compel arbitration, and an ADA complaint in Minnesota. Groupon's 10-Q says no class has been certified and that it intends to defend itself vigorously.
Who owns and operates Groupon?
Groupon, Inc., a Delaware corporation headquartered at 35 W Wacker Drive, Chicago, owns and operates groupon.com according to its Terms of Use; its stock trades on Nasdaq as GRPN and its 10-K names Dusan Senkypl as CEO. The company acquired LivingSocial, Inc. on October 31, 2016.
