July 2nd I was in an accident. A woman had pulled out in front of a trucker that was in front of her and I hit her. The woman readily admited that it was completely her fault, which was in the police report.
She had an 86 Oldsmobile and I had a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 magnum, customized and looking good. I had actually just finished washing and waxing it and I wasn't even 3 blocks away from my house from where the accident occured.
Anyway, Progressive Insurance, at first was very nice, giving me a rental car and what have you. It than got to the point where I was the one having to call them to check on the status of my claim and that's when the fun started. They gave me this line that they didn't use KBB or any other reputable company to calculate the value of my truck.instead they told me that they used NADA, a company where you have to be a "member" to get any kind of quotes that match theirs. Sure, you can get a quote being a consumer but it ceretainly does not match thiers once so ever, give or take a thousand bucks off. Which leads me to belive that they have some pull or maybe they give money to the NADA to get these very low ball quotes. Than they proceded to tell me that if the damage was more than 65% of the total cost of my truck, the truck would be totaled. Come to find out after lots of arguing and tears.
I had just recently gotten out of the Navy and this truck was all I had, I was involved in a freak carnival ride accident and lost my military carrer, I was certainly not backing down without a fight. They proceded to offer me $1,800 for my truck that according to KBB and other sources was valued at a little more over $6,000. That was after the mileage and general depreciation value was calculated. Remeber the 65% rule. The body shop that it was was towed to said that it would cost form $3,500 to $4,000 to fix my truck. Mind you, 65% of $6,000 is $3,900, within the 65% rule. I argued with them that I wanted my truck fixed that I had been searching for a truck comprable to mine and have been unable to find one. They proceded to tell ym that my truck, by their calculations, was valued at $3,200. WHAT?!
They do not stop there. They than tell me that they have to take off "prior damages" to calculate how much I received. After they were done hacking, they told me I would be receiving a whole $1,800. If you have a ding or a dent, they will take ON TOP OF DEPRECIATION VALUE, the cost to fix it.insuranc is a scam any which way you look at it. I am STILL paying my truck off. I have paid more in insurance than they have paid me for my vehicle. It doens't matter if you had custom paint, custom wheels, leather seats, and custom sound, it wasn't stock and therefor they do not care. I have thousand put into my truck and that didn't seem to matter. When the government made it a law, the insurance companies took advantage and are screwing everyone in sight. Not only did they not pay me what I as due, they made out with a $1,000 salvage fee. Take it for what it's worth, Progessive and any other car insurance company are crooks and the government give them that right!
