My Ford 150 recently start clattering a lot, come to find out a known problem existed with this particular engine and no notification was ever sent for recall, I reached my warranty and extended warranty, and at 100,000 then engine trashed.
Ford's engineering in this design, a 4.2L EFI engine, was a thin wall in the water jacket, I've gotten quotes on replacement engines both Ford and After market, the After market provides a much better warranty 3 year 75k miles versus Ford's 1 year. 36k miles. The Ford Dealer wants to charge in excess of $4400 for the replacement, an engine shop nearby will put in an after market Jaspar for $3200.00.. It is obvious that the Dealer Ford (Lithia, is not crediting the Core charges back on the bill)
I am peeved in several ways, #1 since this is in fact a known issue with this model engine and in particular a higher occurance of failure is well documented, Ford failed to notify and fix the issue. The fact the Ford knew in good faith this engine was a problem they failed to inform owners in a fashion early enough to fix the water jacket problem before it became necessary for a complete engine replacement.
If Ford intends to fix this problem they need to do so in a fashion consistent with the Engine replacement vendors that provide adequate solutions. The warranty coverage and pricing must be of a similar to justify ever using Ford Service and repair.
