Ford issued a recall for 1994 Mercury Sable cars with the 3.8 engine due to head gasket failure. I took my vehicle to the local Mercury dealor to have it checked and was told the gasket was not leaking at this time and thus a repair could not be made.
My 94 Sable has 61,400 miles on it and I have since been told by mechanics not employed with Ford that the gasket may not fail until 70,000, 80,000, 100,000 etc. However, according to Ford the problem must appear by February in order for the repair to be made at Ford's exspense.
I phoned Ford and explained my dissatisfaction with this situation. Ford knew there was a problem with these engines and yet continued to put them in their cars. Because my car does not yet have enough miles on it, for the gasket to fail I feel I am being ripped off and left with a $1500.00 repair when it does fail. I am also fearful to drive my car on a long trip for fear this engine could fail at any time.
There are many Ford/Mercury owners in the same situation. Perhaps together we can place pressure on Ford to fix these engines at THEIR expense.
I informed Ford I will continue to advocate for the repair of my engine and will not purchase another Ford product in the future and will suggest to others not to buy a Ford vehicle.
