My in-laws asked me to help find them a car. Since I have purchased many vehicles, I offered to help. I have a couple of dealers I prefer to go to knowing that they are honest and have treated me well (yes, there are actually honest car dealers), however my in-laws wanted a dealer on their side of town. We went to Midway, met the (at the time) very nice salesperson.
We explained that we wanted a 2002 Altima. He proceeded to show us a couple of them. Test drove one which had some minor problems. After that he said that he has been selling so many, that those are the only ones they have, but he could easily put us into an Infiniti for our stated price of under $14000."Ignore all price stickers, you and I both know that they mean nothing, all prices are at least $4000 over what they are actually worth", was his line, numerous times. We found an Infiniti for $15995, he assured me that it was well within our price range. Test drove it, and liked it, and decided to purchase it.
As soon as we sat down in the showroom, it began. First of all he comes with a ridiculous payment of almost $500 a month with $2800 down, and no term mentioned. As soon as I saw it and he saw me smirk over it, he was noticably embarrassed and said that it was for 24 months, that is why it is so high. Since they started out with a stupid offer, I of course started out with a ridiculously low offer of $225 p/m/$1000 down/60 months. We went back and forth. Finally they say "what is it going to take for you to buy this" I told them my price, which worked out to approximately $13000 plus taxes and license fees (about $14500 all included). I had worked out all fees and interest charges to the penny. They said that was math was stupid. As soon as I mentioned the fact that it was the same (even a little bit more) than the salesperson offered to me, and all I was asking was for them to honor their promise, they all of a sudden pleaded ignorance to any claims, even though all of us heard it. The finance guy called me a couple names and left.
Anyway, we left and the next day purchased exactly what we wanted, at exactly the right price at another dealer (in about 1/2 the time!)
