In December I had my vehicle towed into the infamous Cottman Transmission to inspect my transmission that had froze and was informed I needed a new transmission to the tune of $1800 with a 2yr/24,000 mile warranty. I granted the ok to have the work done. A week later my truck broke down again and would not move.
I immediately contacted Cottman and informed them of the same. The vehicle was towed back to Cottman and I was informed that the transmission was "good" but the rear was shot and I needed to replace the same to the tune of $1200. I immediately had another mechanic look at it who informed me the rear was not shot but that the transmission had a crack in it.
Although the rear was not shot, he already had the rear apart, and gave me a great deal on replacing it and being that my truck is a 1990 (in great shape w/a new motor and all already invested it in), I decided to have the same done. After receiving word from my mechanic that the rear was done and after my return from vacation, I contacted Cottman to advise them what my mechanic had informed me and had the vehicle towed back to them to have the transmission fixed since I believed it would be covered under the warranty.
However, the same was not. I was informed that when the rear blew, it damaged the transmission (for which I might add, they looked at and said nothing was wrong with it intially) and that it needed to be re-done and that the same was not under warranty being that it was not a defective transmission or shotty workmanship and that I would have to pay an additional $1378 to get a new repeat warranty and have the same done.
The work was authorized and I picked the vehicle up a week later only to discover that I was now only given a 1yr/12,00 mile warranty and it was still slipping. I immediately contacted my bank and put a stop payment on the additional $1378 and sent a certified letter to Cottman detailing the above.
These people are the biggest rip offs and con artists that I have ever seen. I believe they intentionally damage other parts of your vehicle in order to get you back. Additionally, I do not believe they ever even rebuilt my transmission, I think they replaced it with someone elses damaged tranny knowing that it would only last me a couple of days and then die again.
The vehicle is in the process of being taken to a reputable tranmission place and I will keep you posted.
Anyone currently having transmission problems are strongly advised to stay away from this company.
