Jack Williams Tire Company
Marshall's Creek PA State Inspection Scam Mechanic Auto

Jack Williams Tire and Auto in Marshall's Creek. Burned me three times.

First a bit of history about me: I have been around cars my whole life. Two of my brothers are Mechanics, my father is a wrench head, I worked for a reputable auto shop for years until I decided to find a better career. I always help my friends with their cars.

Last November, I helped a friend replace the tie rods on his wife's SUV. Once the tie rods were replaced, we took it to Jack Williams for an alignment. They would not perform the alignment stating it needed ball joints. I tested the ball joints and they were fine. We went into the shop and I looked at it with the tech performing the alignment. When showing us the issue, I pointed out where the play was coming from and the ball joints were fine. They then said it needed tie rods. I showed the tech the tie rods were new. I made my friend take the car elsewhere for the alignment and it has been fine since.

Every time I have taken a car in to this shop, it has been a similar circumstance. The last time it was with a state inspection with them trying to sell me tires.

I have a new car. It has 12k miles on it. I checked the vehicle over before taking it in for inspection. All lights function, brakes are fine, tires are good. (Tire spec in PA is 2/32 of an inch of tread minimum tread). I did not want to go to Jack Williams, but as the car is new, figured nothing could be wrong with the inspection. Jack williams Failed the inspection stating the car needed tires. I went back, checked the tires and they were fine. I initially performed the penny test (abe's beard), when I went back to get the car, I used a tire guage and there is indeed 4/32 of tread left. Enough to pass inspection, tires should be replaced soon.

Jack williams failed the inspection. They insisted it needed new tires. They were only trying to force me to buy new tires from them. I took the vehicle to the dealership and it passed inspection. They did inform me that the tires should probably be replaced soon (this I know), but the tires had enough tread to pass inspection.

I am researching the state laws regarding inspection and how to report a shop which fails insisting on unnecessary work.
