Hyundai Motors 100,000 mile warranty is totally worthless

Hyundai's 100.000 mile/ten year warranty is not worth the paper it's written on. I own a 2004 Hyundai Sonata. I purchased it new at Auffenberg Hyundai in Fairview Heights, Illinois in July. My car came with the 5-speed manual transmission.

Before I purchased this vehicle, I asked Carl my salesperson about Hyundai's 100,000 mile/10 year warranty. He told me it was the best in the automoblie business. I specifically asked about the warranty on the manual clutch. Carl told me that if I went out and deliberately tore up the clutch, it would be covered under warranty. He even went further and told me that no matter how many times the clutch went out, it would be repaired or replaced for free as long as under the warranty. No questions asked. My wife and I foolishly believed him and purchased this car, based mainly on the sales pitch of this salesman.

In October my car had 70,000 miles on the odometer. I noticed the clutch beginning to slip while shifting and driving on my way to work. When I got in the parking lot, the clutch went completely out. I called Hyundai's Motorist Assist for towing assistance. This was the beginning of my nightmare with Hyundai.

Under the terms of the roadside assist, I could only have my car towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership. I was then informed that that the tow would cost me out of pocket expenses. I told the dispatcher it should be a no cost tow. She insisted on billing me. We went around and around on this issue. It took one week to finally get my car towed to a dealer. Another Hyundai nightmare.

Once the car was finally towed to Auffenberg Hyundai, the warranty issue on the clutch was discussed. I was then told by the dealership that the clutch was NOTcovered under warranty. Kevin, the repair department manager, told me a manual clutch is only covered for 12,000 miles or 12 months. Kevin told me this repair would not be covered under their 100,000 mile warranty. Another Hyundai nightmare was unfolding.

Kevin told be to properly diagnose the problem, the engine would have to be partially disassembled to get to the clutch. His estimate was originally $1,400.00 dollars total repair cost. I don't have this huge amount of money lying around the house. Kevin assured me he would try to work out some kind of arrangements with the repairs. More Hyundai nightmares, except they would get far even worse.

The final actaul cost to replace my manual clutch came to $1,900.00. I was informed that the "original" clutch was no longer made by Hyundai. My Sonota would rerquire a more expensive clutch to the cost of an extra $500.00. My nightmarish experience with Hyundai kept getting worse and worse. Auffenberg Hyundai and Hyundai Corporate Office lied to me throughout this whole terrible expeirience. Gina Mouton, an Executive Analyst with Hyundai Corporate in California, told me she would reimburse me $900.00 of the total repair cost.

Gina Mouton instructed me to fax to her private corporate fax number a copy of all the repair bills. I promptly followed her instructions, and faxed all the necessary paperwork as requested. She promised to help me with part of the repairs. She has yet to return any of my numerous calls to her private number in Fountain Valley, California. No response. No calls. No check.
I am still calling her for a response. Nothing at all.

I will never again buy a Hyundai product. My next car will be a Chevrolet or Buick. If you are considering buying a Hyundai or Kia, don't believe the salesperson's pitch about their so-called great warranty. As soon as some major repair comes along, you will be stuck with the entire repair cost. Hyundai will leave you high and dry. It cost me almost $2,000.00 and weeks of aggravation to learn this valuable lesson. Don't by Hyundai.
