Complaint / Review
Drivetime
Harrassment, Unlawful business practices

I'm a college student who needed a car right away since the engine in my previous car died. Since I have a very little credit history, and have not worked at the same job for a long period of time (because of school and interships, etc) I felt I had no choice but to go to the "Go To" Guys, DriveTime.

In July of my mother took me to Drivetime which was where she got her car due to credit issues. They gave me the application and asked for 8 references which all had to be verified otherwise the process could not continue.

I explained my situation to tell because at the time I was working in Tampa during an internship until the middle of August and then I would be returning to school in Daytona to continue working as a delivery driver and a computer lab assistant at school. I gave them all the necessary information for all three jobs but they only used my information from my internship since I was making a little over $1000 every two weeks.

They told me I was approved and that I would be paying $195 every two weeks. This scared me and I really wanted to leave but they did not let me. I knew I could afford the payments but I just wasn't sure if I wanted to but since I didn't have a choice I went through with it.

In October, my payroll was changed on my job at school and my check was delayed for about 3 weeks. I informed drivetime that I would late on a payment because of this. I had received numerous phone calls at my delivery job telling everyone my business and threating to take the car, they harassed all of my references. I asked them to at least contact me on my cell phone rather than my place of employment but they proceeded to do otherwise. Barely a week later I caught back up with the payments and all seemed well.

Later the same month, Drivetime contacted me and said that my account was being reviewed for a random audit by the bank and that they needed to verify my current employment. So they harassed me and my employer for information that we both felt should have been taking care of at the time of purchase. They argued with my manager and even hung up on him on numerous occasions. For about two weeks, every day I would come to work my manager would tell me that they we harassing him because he did not feel comfortable signing his name on a document they faxed him to verify my employment.

If they claimed that my account is fine then what gives them the right to harass every one around me because they did not do their job from the beginning? How are they approving individuals without confirming ALL information on the application? How can they charge 3 to 4 times over blue book retail to individuals like myself? It just isn't right.
