I have a 2001 Mercury Sable LS Wagon with 25k miles. The automatic transmission failed completely. I had it towed into the closest dealership for repair. I was accused of abusing the car by drag racing it and reving the engine and raming it into gear. The dealership then contracted Ford to have my warranty revolked.
I had an independent party (recommended by a local attorney) inspect the vehicle and write a report (defective transmission) to send in to Ford for arbritration as required by law in the state of Ohio. Ford totally rejected by claim for arbritration by stating it wasn't an arbritration issue.
I have since had to have the car repaired at my own expense $2,800 at a transmission repair specialist. The car sat on two dealership lots for almost sixty days. I am now trying to decide my next step; to sue Ford (the attorney wants a $2500 retainer plus a monthly or hourly fees) or try to recoup my expenses ($4800, monthly car pymts, insurance, repair etc.) through small claims court.
I have been treated extremely poorly by Ford customer service, the dealership and the regional manager would not even discuss the issue on the phone with me. My parents have been loyal Ford customers since the mid-1950's and this wagon is the third ford vehicle I have owned. I have never been treated this badly by any manufacturer ever before, I have previously owned Chryslers and a Pontiac where warrantly work was done curtiously and in a timely manner.
My father's explorer transmission had to be replaced at 72K miles, fortunately he had an extended warranty by GE. My husband was going to purchase a new Ford truck, now he wouldn't dare.
