My 1995 Mustang recently experienced premature head gasket failure at approx. 65,000 miles. This was the result of a defective design that Ford has known about for years. They recently extended the original warrantly to seven years of 100,000 miles because of customer compaints and public pressure.
Althought I had been having problems for months the head gasket failure wasn't properly diagnosed until 13 days after the extended warranty period expired. Ford has now refused to honor the warranty even though I have service records indicating problems began developing months ago when the car was still under warranty.
Be advised the Center for Auto Safety has pointed out to Ford tha Head Gaskets are not a routine maintenance items and should last the lifetime of the car. Ford's own recommended maintenance schedule implies that they expect the head gaskets to last for at least 120,000 miles. This is a perfect example of Ford treating consumers unfairly by avoiding responsibility for their mistakes.
