Loose bolt, bad part, wrong band —won't honor warranty— Ripoff

N July 26, I ordered a 4l60e Raptor level three transmission, and it was received on August 16. It was installed the second week of September.in the middle of October I had to remove it due to a malfunction caused by a bolt behind the torque converter. The bolt that held the bell-housing to the transmission had backed out and ground into the converter. I telephoned PATC and asked that this be noted in my file in case of further malfunction in the transmission. The cost incurred in pulling, repairing, and reinstalling was my own ($375).

On April 17, at just three months out of warranty, the transmission failed again. The second malfunction had two causes. First, a batch of torque drive shafts had a metal problem and mine was indeed one of them. This was confirmed by PATC manager, Jim and the PATC technician via the phone on or about April 23. Second, the original 2/4 band installed by PATC was not as ordered or specified. This was evident from the rebuild kit sent by PATC that included a much thicker band. Again, this was confirmed by Jim via the phone on April 27.

They offered to fix it for the cost of parts and their labor if I paid the shipping; however, it was less expensive for me to fix it locally. Had I shipped it to them, the actual causes of the problems (defective torque drive shaft and wrong 2/4 band) would not have been revealed to me. Once revealed, they paid for the rebuild kit—not the labor and materials to make it operable.

To date, PATC has incurred approximately $650 (cost of the rebuild kit and its shipment) that was used to rebuild the transmission at a local shop. I have incurred the cost of pulling and reinstalling the transmission twice (approximately $375 each) in addition to the labor and materials (approximately $635) for the April rebuild. The transmission has had obvious defects with a bolt and a metal torque drive shaft, and it was built with a completely wrong and inefficient 2/4 band. Thank goodness someone else rebuilt it—or—I would have been further ripped-off.

PACT refuses to accept legal and ethical responsibility for the inferior-built transmission. I have filed a complaint with the state attorney, and I am seeking reimbursement via a court case.
