Cottman Transmission - Kurt Taylor
SCAM worked without authorization, very angry manager with bad customer service ripoff

On February 17, I took my 2000 Ford Explorer into Cottman Transmission at 1302 FM 1960 West. It did not shift into any gears accept 1st and 2nd. I researched on the Internet and found out that this is a common problem with Fords.

Since I am a single parent I had no clue what to do. So my first instinct was to look in the phone book for a trusted shop. I saw an ad saying Cottman Transmission had been in business since 1962. This is one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. I dropped it of roughly about 10:00 and after taking it to the shop they ran their free 21-point check.

Later that day I received a phone call from Kurt Taylor (manager) saying that they found some problems but they were going to have to drop the transmission because they were internal. I only authorized him to drop the transmission and find out what the problem was for 300.00.By the middle of the following week, around the 20th or 21st.

I received another call from Kurt saying that they found the overdrive gear and busted and they would need to rebuild the entire transmission. He quoted me a price of 2586.00 to rebuild it. Now being an only parent that lives paycheck to paycheck this certainly knocked the breathe out of me. I told him that I need a day or so to figure out how I was going to come up with that large amount of money.

He then asked me if he could go ahead and chemically clean it. My exact words were Ok, just chemically clean it THAT'S IT. On Saturday Feb. 24 I went up to Cottman's hoping I could just pay them for the work that I had authorizing them to do which was $300.00 for dropping the transmission.

After telling Kurt to just put the transmission in the back of the truck he became very defensive. He told me that there was no transmission to put back there and they had already thrown away all the parts and was waiting on new parts to arrive from Ford. I then became furious reminding him that I only authorized him to clean it and that's it. This is when he informed me that I was already in a process of rebuilding and couldn't turn back.

This is when I realized that I was getting screwed over. Kurt said that in order to get the truck out we had to pay 2586.00. I told him that I could not afford to pay that's why were here to pick it up. He said that they could finance me and after telling him many times that I had really bad credit he guaranteed me that I would get accepted. After filling out the papers for financing I again told him not to perform any work at all. He said that he was waiting on parts from Ford.

A week and a half later I got a letter stating that I had been denied by one finance agency. Again I went back up to Cottmans to inform Kurt that I had been rejected. Kurt said that that was one of three finance companies and that he would get us approved by at least one.

After a month and a half later and no word from the finance company a close friend of mine saw the situation I was in and decided to help me. On April 7th my friend, son and I went to Cottmans determined to get my truck out and taking it to a honest shop. We asked him how much it would cost just to get it out.

This is when he informed me that it was fixed and all ready. This caught me completely off guard considering that I did not authorize him to fix it and told him not to do any work at all. After asking him why he fixed it when I told him not to do any work he said that they had to continue since they chemically cleaned it. He explained it as being common sense and that I should have already known that by cleaning it, it would break all the seals, forcing it to be fixed.

I continuously told him not to fix it and to stop working on it. I never authorized him to fix it, but he still went ahead and did. Then Kurt told me that it had been finished on Feb. 19, which was the same day that he previously told us that he was awaiting for parts. My son realizing that he was lying asked him why I never received a phone call saying it was done.

Kurt said that he did call me. Which brings up the question if it was done the day we went in there why didn't he tell us why we were there? My son asked him why he didn't tell us and Kurt told him that it was considered done but they were waiting on fluid to put in the torque converter.

After my son asked him why he was changing up his story he replied it doesn't matter now it's done. After my son kept asking him questions, which he kept trying to ignore and avoid them, Kurt finally told him that he didn't have to listen to this and walked out of the office.

My friend arrived and just wanted to pay with her discover card and leave. But this became a problem too. The owner Steve, said that he could not take the credit card because the repairs were not in here name. Reluctantly, he agreed to put the repairs in here name so she could pay for me.

While reading the warranty the manager Kurt stated that Cottman didn't warranty the electronics but the company they bought them from did. After paying the bill we had to drive over to another shop and picking it up. We then drove back to see Kurt so that he could sign the warranty saying that the electronic company warranties the part so we would not get caught in another loop hole. After asking him to write that down and sign his name he denied to do it. My son then asked him So you can tell us that they are under warranty, but you can't sign saying that you told us that He replied by saying Ya and walked away from us.

On April 10 I received a certified letter from Cottmans Transmission. Since it was to late to get it I called Kurt, the manager, trying to find out what it was for. He repeatedly told me to just throw it away and forget about it, and that it wasn't important. I then asked him the owner of the franchise at 1302 FM 1960, where he worked. He suddenly became very defensive raising his voice at me and saying nothing matters anymore that I had my truck and it was done. I repeatedly asked just for the owners name but was answered by Kurt with him raising his voice even louder.

I had no problem with the price or anything just that I did not authorize them to fix it. This company is not at all honest and even though Cottman's say that they have The Highest Quality Customer Service with No Surprises I strongly feel I was taken advantage of. The Manager Kurt Taylor continuously lied to us and performed work that I did not authorize. This by far is the worst that I have ever been treated by anyone or by company. I strongly feel something needs to be done to stop this business.
