Knowingly sold defective engine and oil pum for Land Rover Discovery

4 days after warranty expired, the engine oil light came on and within 2 minutes the engine stalled and would not turn over. Dealer informed me that the vehicle needed a new motor and that since it was out of warranty, Land Rover would not be covering any portion of it.

I have since come to learn that on the 2003 and 2004 Discovery Series II, that there is a issue with the dowel pins on the block not aligning correctly with the oil pump. This results in oil starvation and eventually engine failure. Land Rover was concerned enough about it issue a Technical Alert on March 14. The Alert (T03 1201) is titled "2003 Discovery Series II oil pump failures", and clearly states that the defect is the result of manufacturing error.

The National Highway Transportation Safty Administration has 5 complaints on file for the same issue. The cause of the failure has been confirmed by a large, independent Land Rover facility.

Land Rover North America and the local dealer, Miramar Land Rover in San Diego, have been completly un-cooperative and at times rude, even when presented with the Technical Alert.

This is not an isolated incident, Land Rover knowingly sold a defective product, but it seems has decided to dig in its heels rather than take responsibility.
