About a year ago I my lovely exboyfriend had my 2003 Pontiac Grand Am impounded. I had a great job and need transportation deperately. With bad credit looming over my head, I reluctantly went to my local JD Byrider. I told them I had to be somewhere in a couple of hours, explained what and why I needed a vehicle and if they could help. They told me no problem. Two hours turned into six hours. They have you do a budget to see if you can make the payments. Mine kept coming up negative. The salesman said, "Well, let's lower this and this bill... And add this and this." I bet he went through it 3 times to make the amount 'right' for the payment. At the time I was desperate... I didn't care... I needed a car. Then, when it was time to sign the paperwork, they told me they were going to videotape me... Agreeing and signing all the papers. I felt exremely uncomfortable and voilated. But again, I was desperate.
So I've had this car for a year now. CNAC continously calls two or three days before the loan is even due to remind you your loan is due. They even send out 'reminder' letters - reminding you there is no grace period. God forbid you're a day late. I was in the beginning and got a lecture about it when I went to pay in person.
Now here's my biggest complaint. I have been unemployed since June 16th. I informed CNAC of this. My husband (who I recently married and had nothing to do with this loan) gets paid monthly and he has helped me a couple of times. However, I was seven days late last week. These people called everyone I listed as my references - more than once - and they called me at least 35 times. I'm outside one afternoon and this man pulls up. He has this clipboard in one hand and his cell phone in the other. He tells me he is from JD Byrider and he's here to collect my car payment. I told him I did not have a job and if he wanted to take the car, to take the car. He gets on his cell phone and says, "Here, Shelly wants to talk to you." Shelly, who is from CNAC, asks me why I can't make the car payment. I explained to her I did not have job and that if they want to repo the car, to do so. She said even if they repo'd I'd still have to make the payments. She said I signed a legal contract and I was on tape promising to pay for this car. She started asking me why I didn't have a job, if I've been looking, if I filed for unemployment, etc. She then said, "if you're married why can't your husband pay for this." This whole conversation lasted about 15 minutes... With Mr. Thug standing there watching me with his arms crossed - like he was going to pounce on me if I made a run for it. He said he wasn't leaving without a payment. Shelly told me to write a check because it wouldn't clear for about a week. So I did. Now my payment is due again... And the same thing is happening. I know I owe my car payment. I don't need 35 phone calls, them calling my friends and parents, sending letters and showing up at my home to remind me of this. They know I am unemployed. If anyone reading this is contemplating getting a car from JD Byrider, don't do it. Here's another thing...
I bought a '97 Toyota Corolla for $9,000. Yes... That's what they're making me pay - over $300 a month for a '97 Corolla with over 150,000 miles. I can't trade this in. You know what... They make me carry full coverage in insurance on this vehicle. If it were totalled in an accident, the insurance company would not pay me $9,000 to cover it. They'd probably pay $2000 (it's most likely value) and I'd be stuck paying CNAC the extra $7,000. I am stuck with this vehicle. And they are crooks, liars, thugs... Trust me... Do not buy a car from these people... Hindsight is always 20/20.
