I have a 2008 Escape. On 1/5 I noticed the steering wheel would turn itself back and forth quickly for a few seconds when in park or drive with the brake on (stopped at a red light or stop sign). Then the shaking would happen while driving and would be accompanied with a banging or clanking sound against the firewall. Then my steering wheel would lock up while I was driving, without notice. I thought the power steering pump was the problem but then found the 2008 escape didn't have one, it has electronic steering. I found there were hundreds of people who, online, shared their stories of accidents and near accidents because of the same problem... All in specifically 2008 escapes. They all went to the dealership and were all told the same thing. I too took my escape to the dealer and was told the same as them, $1500 to fix the problem. Replacing the steering column and reprogramming the computer that controls the electric steering. How can Ford not see this as a hazard, a threat to LIFE and not issue a recall?! I contacted the NTHSA and opened a case with them regarding this issue and I encourage everyone to do the same!!! I did call Ford and let them know I opened a case with the NTHSA regarding this matter.
