I recieved a call from a lady (she sounded foreign, maybe from India) who said I was chosen to receive a government grant of at least $8,000.00. She claimed that the government gave out many grants per year based on a person's Credit Bureau score and a few other criteria. She also claimed that they were a member of the Better Business Bureau.
In order to receive this grant, I had to provide them with my checking account number and a post-dated check for $239.00. She said that this fee covered the processing and paper work that was done in that office. I belived her and gave her all my info.
The lady told me that I would recieve an information package within 10 days or so that explained everything and also needed my signatures. She also provided me with a 1-800 customer service number. I believed every word she said.
Shortly after talking with her, I checked online to see if I could learn anymore about these gov. Grants. Sadly I found out that people before me got caught in this same scam.
Curious, I called the cusotmer service line and found that it wasn't even a working number. I quickly put a stop payment on the check and called local authorities. Unfortunately, the stop payment cost me money and I doubt if the cops even look into it.
Please, don't let this happen to you.
