Government Grant Processing Center
Phone scam

I recieved a call on a rarely used telephone line from the "Government Grant Processing Center" informing me that I had recieved a grant. The person calling had an obviously Indian accent, but gave an American sounding fake name.

I asked what the grant was for, and he read off his script a list of things, ending with "pretty much anything, as long as it's not illegal". He then mentioned there was a $249 processing fee involved with the grant. At this point, I began a web search for the Government Grant Processing Center, and found this site. When he asked for my check routing number, I gave him my Southwest Airline frequent flyer number, which he accepted.

For my account number, I gave him the barcode number off of my StopnShop card. He accepted these both as valid, which assured my that this was a fraud, so I hung up when he said he was going to tranfer me to the "validation center". After hanging up, they contintued to call back several dozen times over the next 15 minutes, despite me asking them to put me on their "do not call list" (a federal requirement).
