Received a letter claiming to be from ECMC, which is a legitimate handler of student loans. It claims I am over six months late on student loan payments. It had my correct name and address but no identifying info as to the account in question. It did not have a balance due.
The letter was on a bad photocopy of letterhead that looked very cheap.
I have one student loan account with lender ACS (recently transferred by Wells Fargo). This account is current. I called both ACS and the Dept of Education and had this verified. According to the Dept of Education the phone number listed on the letter is NOT on their list of legitimate numbers for ECMC. They gave me a real number for ECMC and I reported this to them.
I also called the number on the letter and got a message saying to call back next Tuesday, 9/13 because of system outages due to a transition. No way to get an actual person.
If you receive a similar letter, DO NOT automatically assume it's legit, even if you do have deliquent loans. Always verify with you current lender!!
