Greenpoint Savings Bank advertising is deceptive. Their checking accounts are not free. Hidden charges exist. If you use your ATM card, which they encourage, you are charged $1.50 for each transaction, because of this fee, I changed banks. However, its not quite that simple. I was informed that I could not close the account over the telephone or via fax. I had to come to their bank physically to close the account. Yet, the bank does not have Saturday hours and is open late only on Thursday evenings until 6pm. I work late and could not get to the bank.
So what happened? I left money in the account to cover one miscellaneous check. However, Greenpoint started charging my "free" checking account monthly fees and I ended up owing them money. I had to pay to close this account. What's free about that?
