Ripoff Dishonest Coercive collection practices threatened arrest

A representative of United Legal Corp. Left urgent messages for me at home, work and on my cell phone regarding a "very important matter that needed to be discussed with either [me] or an attorney." When I called them back a short while later, they told me that they were going to have me "processed" for a bad check I had supposedly written to EZ Pay Day Loans. I had never received an written notice to this effect, and when I asked United Legal for any information on this, they simply refused.

The rep continually threatened to have me processed unless I made an electronic payment (by credit card, ACH withdrawal, or Western Union Quik Collect) within 2 hours. They said if I could not come up with the $700 or so in that time period, they would send paperwork to have me "processed" and that they didn't want to do it because they subpoenaed my court records and found that I didn't have any "priors".

They also stated that if I could make payment in full, they would pull my paperwork and then submit paperwork to have me "exonerated."

The sticking point is: neither EZ Pay Day nor United Legal will tell me how much I actually owe, and they actually claim that they never received payment on this account, although my bank statements prove otherwise. They continually refuse my repeated requests to have anything sent to me in writing.

I'm a living witness: pay day loans do NOT pay. They will bring havoc to your life, and cause dire financial problems later on down the line. If a pay day loan is your absolute last resort, then be very aware. These companies are out to get you, and lure you into a cycle of dependency (repeated pay day loans). If you try to get out on your own terms and not theirs, they will make your life a living hell.

If you are dealing with a pay day loan repayment situation, contact your state's attorney general office immediately. Also, contact the attorney general office for the state in which the company you're dealing with is located. It wouldn't hurt to file a complaint with the BBB. Document everything! Be diligent! Most states do not look favorably upon these pay day lenders as many of them thumb their nose at the law and find new and exciting ways to circumvent state laws.

Only recently, I contacted my state's attorney general office about my situation, and thus far, they have been very responsive and helpful. Actually, by helping you, they're helping to get more ammunition to use against these predators.
