I thought I was ordering a "regular" credit card; I didn't pay the proper attention to the unsolicited offer that I received in the mail (my fault). When I received the catalog from them, I realized the error and called CONSUMER PREFERRED immediately.
I spoke to DIANE on 10/23/03 at 2:40pm EDT to cancel my membership. She tried to talk me out of it, but finally said she would cancel it and told me a refund check would be sent "soon".
I received the refund check ($45.00) on 11/4/03. I deposited it into my checking account on 11/12/03 after which, on 11/24/03, my bank returned it to me as "returned unpaid". My bank also charged me a $5.00 "Returned Deposited Item Fee".
I tried to call CONSUMER PREFERRED on 11/25/03 at 3:15pm EST and got a recording giving their hours of business of which I was well within the boundaries and was then disconnected! I redialed four times, same result.
CONSUMER PREFERRED owes me $50.00 (yes, they're responsible for the $5.00 bank fee, also). If I get my money, I'll rebut this complaint.
