I joined my free credit profile (myfreecreditprofile.com) for a 30 day trial membership, with no intention of subscribing as a member, with an annual fee of $79.95.
On their web-site an option is provided to cancel membership. Just need to point and click the "Cancel" button, and presumably, you have cancelled your membership. Wrong! There is no confirmation provided for verification at the time of cancellation. This should have been a warning to me, however, I did not take time to call and speak to a customer service representative to confirm my 30 day trial was cancelled.
When I received the $79.95 charge, I had a feeling I had been duped, but called customer service to see if the matter could be resolved without involving my credit card service. The agent asked me if I had received a confirmation of cancellation - "No" I answered. She snipedly replied, "How can we confirm you cancelled your membership without it?" I would think a website such as this would have record of every transaction (and I am sure they do). She then told me I would be refunded $60.00, not $79.95. I told her that was unacceptable, that I should not be charged anything.
This matter will be handled by the credit card company, and ultimately, Free Credit Profile will not be paid. I can honestly state that I did not authorize the charge and absolutely followed their direction to terminate the trial membership in accordance with terms provided on their web site.
If you decide to use this service, be sure to get your cancellation in writing, or you will have the same problem. If its free - it is almost always too good to be true - case in point!
