I have been a good customer of Emerge, previously Providian for years. I have excellent credit and have always paid my balance monthly in full. I mailed a payment before leaving for the holidays only to find, when I returned home, that it was never received. I immediately made my payment which ended up being 14 days late. I received a letter a few days later notifying me that I had failed to honor the terms of the cardholder agreement and my account was now closed. When I called credit card services, they agreed that I am an excellent customer, understood how I felt, but there was nothing they could do to re-open the account.
