I have been a Comerica customer for years.in the last year, they have changed their policy to make it much easier for them to charge overdraft charges. I have learned this system and how to work with it to keep from having excessive overdraft charges.
Last month I had to move on short notice and relized we would be close on covering some of our automatic bill payments and the move. I called the bank to stop one of our automatic changes from going through that month so that we would not incurr any overdraft charges... Knowing that we would just pay that particular bill a couple of weeks later.
The customer service agent knew exactly what I wanted to do. She faxed me the appropriate paperwork, I filled it out and faxed it back, and I was assured that all was good to go.
The next week, that supposedly stopped charge was posted to my account anyway and, following the new policies, all of my transactions were posted, highest to lowest, on the same day so as to create 7 overdraft charges.
I called the bank and, wouldn't you know it, the previous agent had me fill out the wrong paperwork. It seems using your debit card is different than using a check when it comes to stopping these charges. Mind you, the current agent knew this transactions was on my debit card by looking at their computer, I did not mention anything. Okay... Let's just get those pesky overdraft charges reversed... Not going to happen. This whole thing was my fault because I did not say the word debit card when I called previously. Nevermind that they knew what kind of transaction it was this time because they could see it in the computer, not because I had said anything. It was still my fault.
Many days and calls later, all the way up to the corporate quality assurance office, I had two of the overdraft charges reversed, but no more. I could just contact a lawyer if I wanted.
You just gotta love these corporations that care so much about their customers. I am sure they could have just reversed my $180 without even noticing it, but for me, it is the money to feed my family this week... I guess we will just have to wait until next week for a meal.
