Portfolio Recovery Associates are trying to collect a debt that is not owed. I began getting letters and phone calls about one month ago. They are stating that a balance of $26.00 is owed for an AOL account.
We have not had an AOL account for four years. After several calls which they went as far as asking for a confirmation code from four years ago verifying my cancelation with AOL, I decided to give AOL a call. I was able to get a confirmation that 1. My bill was paid in full. 2. That I had a confirmation code to verify this. 3. My account was cancelled 8.
I have called them and left a detailed message. I will follow up with written coorespondence.
In closing I find thier tactics borderline criminal. Using a consumers old account information and alleging a balance is left on it is pretty low. Most consumers do not hold on to that stuff beyond a year or two. Maybe $26.00 dosen't sound like much, but how many consumers are paying up rather that dealing with the phone calls?
