I received the first call from Portfolio in August. They left a message on my answering machine. Since I don't have any outstanding debts that I know of, I decided to call them.
They told me it was about money I owed from 1996. I recognized the name of the company that they were looking to collect money for. The told me the amount was about $700...$200 was the original debt but interest had accrued and now the amount was about $700. I told them that this was a debt from 12 years ago and that I had paid it in full. I also said that if they are claiming the debt had accrued interest, then why hadn't I been notified of this before interest accrued. They had no answer.
I told them there was probably a statute of limitations and they said maybe to collect the debt but not to put it on my credit report. I asked how I get them not to put this on my credit report and they said I would have to send proof that I paid it. I told them this was 12 years ago and I didn't think I had the paperwork to prove I paid it. I even said that the IRS only requires you to save information for 3 years and they're looking for me to give them proof from 12 years ago! The girl I spoke to was very rude and kept interrupting me because I was raising my voice. I told her I needed something in writing showing me who they were and proof of the alleged debt. Unfortunately I gave her my address but still have not received anything in the mail.
I get daily calls from them requesting me to call them regarding this alleged debt. They call every day, including Saturdays and Sundays. I do not return the calls.
