I have an issue with VISA. I've had this card for several years, and have never been late on any payment. I have it automatically deducted for that reason.
I had fraudulent charges on the card of $198.50 on 3/21/08 for US Airways, and another charge for $1,781.83 the next day for a charge in Europe! This charge was included on the statement with a 4/22/08 closing date due 5/18/08.
I reported the fraudulent charges via phone on 5/27/08. At that time, a block was put on the card and a new one issued.
During that time, my Mom died, my brother was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer, and I had surgery. Because of this, I didn't pay as much attention to my statements as I usually do.
Even though I notified them by phone within the allotted time frame, I didn't return the written form within that time. For that reason, they are refusing to remove the fraudulent charges.
My card never left my possession and I feel those charges were approved far too quickly with a number only. They were contrary to any charges I've ever made. I was never contacted to verify the charges.
I feel the company is using this loophole to avoid their responsibility in this matter. Shouldn't a European charge for $1781.83 raise a red flag?
These charges are quite large and I'm on disability and can't afford to pay for charges I didn't make.
I've contacted every organization I can think of that might help, to no avail.
Could anyone help me or give me any advice as to where to go from here?
