Washington Mutual recently has begun off shoring a position in the mortgage division, called "Validators". The people in this position review applications, credit reports and other personal information provided by the applicants for home mortgage loans. Validators from the US were flown to India to teach their successors the very jobs they were to lose as a result of the off shore policy.
The information is faxed to India without the clients permission or knowledge. It would seem to me that this could lead to wide spread identity theft at the worst and simply not giving the applicant the opportunity to opt out of doing business with a company that is providing their personal information to parties on the other side of the globe. The persons involved may want choose not to do business with a company that is off shoring their jobs as a matter of principal.
It comes as no surprise to employees of Washington Mutual that they have begun this practice, as their labor practices smack of a third world nature at best. They hire people into "salaried" positions giving the impression that you will be working primarily a 40 week work schedule. Then they are given goals and quotas that require an average of a ten to eleven hour work day to maintain along with micro management of the work flow. People who are doing exemplary work that would be at the extreme high end of performance at a competitors place of business are made to feel that their efforts are substandard and always can or need to be improved. This has only been made worse by the contracting mortgage market.
